10 digest from Let’s Elope Today

I am spell-bound by the Photographs of British Algae, which is supposedly the first photographic work by a woman, and the first book produced entirely by photographic means (an information I’m not going to spoil with research). Instantly recognizable today as the blueprint process, the cyanotypes lend themselves beautifully to illustrate objects found in the sea.

In 1950 the American photographer W. Eugene Smith published a visual reportage in the famous Life magazine. The series, which in time was titled “A Spanish Village”, was shot in the Extremaduran village of Deleitosa. This work defined the so-called photo essay genre and even more recorded an indelible image of life in Franco’s backward, rural Spain. Photographer Miki Kratzman has made this small essay from the infamous Deleitosa as it looks today. A fine idea, I wonder if anyone has done it before him.

History seems to be the tag-word for the selection this time. Last is Koen Hauser with his Requiem 126, a selection of photographs that mimic the original Kodak 126 format 9x9. With mobile phone cameras and the like he has shot photographical clichées reminiscent of a pre-digital age. Take a look at his other works as well. He is a master of concepts and odd combinations.

10 digest from Let’s Elope Today

Dear Chris is a body of work by Katrin Koenning. Chris, the husband of Koenning’s cousin Alana, took his own life in an age of twenty-nine. The work combines vernacular pictures from Chris’ childhood album, photographs of some of Chris’ objects kept by Alana, and finally photographs of places of significance to Chris - altogether telling his story, and ours.

In Dear Chris lurks some interesting questions. What do we remember, what do we (choose) to forget? I like Koennings non-linear approach and the feel of intimacy in almost clinical photographs. Dear Chris is currently on view on the Edmund Pearce Gallery in Melbourne.

Another personal work is Noter by our dear friend Sofie Amalie Klougart. Beautifully boring photographs of her (and sometimes our) everyday life with the very lovable Mads. The diaryish photographs is currently on view on Phototek Esbjerg.

Last but not least we have Kyle Laidig, student of Cooper Union. Cooper Union is one of the last tuition free art schools in the US based on the belief that education should be available to everyone in spite of race, sex, religion etc., but beginning in the fall 2014, the school will charge students due to financial issues. Sad, when you have to pay to access education.

Beirut sheets, April 2013

Beirut sheets, April 2013

Tears, Taastrup Kirke, 1985

Although I am not sure where the question came from, I have been asking myself this a lot recently. Undoubtedly it has something to do with a project about love and recollection that I’ve been working on lately, but whether it derives from the literature in my research or from my personal network, I don’t know. It could be something from Calvinos Invisible Cities. It could be from Kjærstads The Seducer. Maybe it is from hiking with a friend who is also geography graduate. Or it could be something M said or wrote. I don’t know, and I still haven’t figured it out.

Becky Cooper, a 25-year-old New Yorker, have done this amazing project called Mapping Manhattan. The idea is almost anoingly simple. She hand-printed hundreds of blank maps of Manhattan, gave them to strangers on the street and asked them to fill them out and send them back to her. The result is a collection of small self-portraits painting not only a picture of the unique individual, but also a picture of the city as a whole. The work was recently published as a small book called ‘A Love (and Sometimes Hate) Story in Maps by 75 New Yorkers’ by Abrams. I am getting one right now and so should you. It’s only twenty dollars!

Bedtime Boy, Copenhagen, March 2013

When I woke up this morning I opened another present from M. This time it contained three stones she had found on her travels, one of which I used to make this photo that I sent to her in return. In addition to the stones there was a small letter telling the stories of them. She had found this one in a river, where all the stones were brown until you washed them. Then (magically, if I may) they changed colours.

miebrinkmann:

10 digest from Let’s Elope Today.

Be sure not to miss one of my favorite photobooks from 2012 edited by Melissa Cantese, Dive Dark Dream Slow. Cantese had the eduring task of editing the achieve of Peter J. Cohen, an archieve of almost 20.000 vernacular and found anonymous photographs. The outcome is a poetic and dreamy narrative. Lucas Simões introduced me to yet another way of destroying negatives, namely burning them, and Quem Brinca Com Fogo is beautifully executed. Last but not least the exhibition Cosmos by Rosemarie Trockel is currently on view in Serpentine Gallery in London. I love the introduction and wish I could go.
